Small Business and Marketing: Be Ready With a Fast Sales Pitch

Sales tips and communication techniques to help make a good first impression

Quick. If you had two minutes or less to explain your business or service, and to make a good, lasting impression, could you do it? Being able to communicate who you are and what you do quickly and concisely is a skill. It is also a difficult thing to do, and according to industry experts, you need to be able to master it. After all, you never know when you’ll have just a few minutes to impress an important potential client. So how do you specify your business and communicate your abilities under a time crunch? Here are tips to get your message across quickly:

Define your market. Be able to not just say what your business does, but also who your ideal customer is, and both in the first two sentences.

Show passion for your product or service. You don’t have to be a crazed salesperson, but you do need to show enthusiasm in your voice and mannerisms, confidently showing you believe in your business message.

Engage in conversation. You want to get your message across to your audience, but you don’t want to present a one-sided lecture. A good introductory conversation should include give and take, so you can hold the interest of your audience, and have them participate in the conversation too.

Project confidence. Don’t forget to breathe while you’re talking, and keep your feet planted firmly on the floor. If you’re jittery or nervous, your potential customer will be too.

Be ready with a comeback. One of the most common questions at a networking event or meeting is, “How’s business?” Be ready with a quick, descriptive and memorable response that acts as a great sound bite for your business.

The more you practice concise responses to describe your business, product or service, the more natural it comes across. You never know when you might have two minutes to make a good impression on just the right person. If you’re prepared, you may just walk away with a new customer.
