Small Business Management: How to Build Loyalty Among Workers

Company loyalty is a must for employers who want a strong, growing company

As a small business owner, you know what it’s like when an employee suddenly up and quits, leaving behind unfinished projects and work voids to fill. It can be frustrating, upsetting and challenging. And every business owner knows that having staff leave is part of life. But if you find yourself facing this challenge more often than not, you might take a good look at your level of employee loyalty.

If you feel that your staff members are always jumping ship in favor of better opportunities, it might be time for you to reevaluate your management style. Building loyalty among your staff members is one of the most important things you can do in order to have a steady workforce and consistent product or service. If you feel like this is an area you need to work on, then consider the following tips:

Pay attention. When you have a worker perform well or do something outstanding, recognize them immediately, both personally and publicly.

Ask for feedback. Make sure you have an avenue for employees to give you feedback or suggestions. When you do get ideas, not only take them seriously, but also involve your staff in finding solutions.

Hold meetings. It’s important to have regular meetings with your staff or department managers in order to discuss pressing matters, new opportunities for business, educational opportunities and routine operations.

Delegate. If you find yourself micromanaging every detail, you will foster resentment that can result in an unhappy, under functioning staff. Practice delegating and then actually let others do the work. Allow your employees to flex their muscle and see what they can do.

Consider flexible work schedules. There are countless ways to allow workers to be flexible and be productive. If some of your staff can telecommute or job share periodically, consider the options and benefits. Allow alternative work hours during holiday or summer months. Flexible work environments are key to employee satisfaction.

Provide good benefits. Make sure you are doing everything you can in order to provide benefits that matter, like a 401(k) and health insurance.

Enjoy your work. Even though traditional “company picnics” sometimes become the butt of jokes, they really are important. Show your appreciation by taking company money and spending it in ways that employees can appreciate. Hold a surprise afternoon ice cream break or a special Fall Party, just to have fun and enjoy each other away from spreadsheets and corporate reports.

There are numerous ways you can help build loyalty and improve company morale. Making your work environment exciting, creative and fun will do wonders when it comes to having a strong staff and positive bottom line.
