Home Based Business Professionals: Building Strong Relationships

How to maintain community relationships, interact effectively with other professionals, build successful business contacts

One of the nicest things about working from your home is that you can be your own boss and create your own schedule. One of the hardest things about working from home is that it’s easy to feel isolated or get out of practice with basic human interaction. When you work in a large office or corporation, you’re forced to interact with others on a regular basis, through meetings, conferences or day-to-day activities. But when you’re at home, talking on the phone is sometimes the closest we get to having human contact.

If you sometimes feel out of practice, and you wonder what you should be doing to make sure that you’re not only still approachable, but that you’re appreciated and understood when you do interact with professionals, consider the following tips for building solid relationships in your business community:

Be approachable. Sometimes the simple act of smiling and putting on a friendly face is enough to let others see your enthusiasm and warm personality. And if this doesn’t come easy to you, try to play the part. You’ll never meet prospective customers or business associates if you don’t seem open to it.

Don’t be fake. When you meet someone, show genuine concern about what they do, how they are feeling or what there interests are. If you just “go through the motions,” and move on, others will pick up on your lack of concern or interest.

Repeat names. It’s the old advice that always rings true … repeat the person’s name throughout the conversation. It helps you remember it and it makes them feel good.

Listen, listen, listen. You can learn more about your audience if you truly hear what they’re saying, instead of thinking up your next line or question. There are lots of hidden sales opportunities when you do the listening and pick up on customer needs that can be met with your services.

Be of help. Instead of focusing on what you can sell or how you can get a new customer, try to identify areas in which you can help others. Offer your knowledge or help instead of your product or service. This will help build relationships and trust in others, which can lead to great things down the road. You will become known as a great resource instead of just a business owner.

Be sincere. Give compliments when appropriate, ask questions that you really want to know, and show your own personality. Share thoughts or feelings about other issues besides just your business or industry. You will be remembered not only for your sincerity, but for your personality and character, rather than just your product or service.

Building relationships is key to having a successful home based business. It increases your visibility and helps you become a presence in your community. By remaining friendly and approachable, you can build those relationships and develop new customers.
