Home Office Tips: Getting Electronics Organized, Part 2

How to organize your cables and wires in your home based business or small business office

As we discussed in the first part of this series, one of the easiest ways that you can take control of your home office is to tame wires and cables that can create an atmosphere of chaos. There are a number of simple solutions to this common problem in home-based businesses. Here are more tips that, according to organizational experts, can make a big difference in a short amount of time:

Protect cords. Your local office supply store will carry a variety of wire cover systems that can prevent potential falls from loose cables and cords strung across the room. These protectors, when installed correctly, will lay flat, cover your wires, and help with safety hazards in your workspace.

Wrap it up. Once you have your computer, laptop and printer all hooked up, it’s easy to get them tangled. There are a number of products available to help with this issue. Check out cable ties, wraps or clips that can help keep your wires straight and in order.

Label it. Have you ever gotten frustrated when trying to figure out which wires go with which machine? While label makers serve wonderful purposes when it comes to labeling containers, files and equipment, you can also make good use of labels by placing them on cables and wires. Not only can you identify which cable goes where, but you can also use them to bunch certain cords together and keep them from tangling.

Box it up. If you find yourself with too much paperwork and nowhere to put it, then you might need to take a trip to your local hardware store. Identify what you need before you go, and then stock up on a variety of storage containers for files, supplies, magazines and any other miscellaneous items you have. There are lots of attractive options out there to suit your taste, including wicker, fabric pop-up boxes, metal or plastic. Label them accordingly and provide yourself a place to put everything up and away in order to create a harmonious environment.

Mount it on the wall. If you find yourself struggling for valuable desk space, you might consider an LCD monitor, with adjustable mount arms, stands and wall mounts. There are a variety of options available, and this solution can help relieve neck and back strain by positioning your monitor at the perfect eye level.

As you attempt to organize your office, you will find many gadgets and products out there that can help eliminate cable and wire messes, which can help you feel better about your office. Taking these small but valuable steps can help you clean up and get down to business.
